Foreign policy and religious freedom part 1 1.18.12

Why menion foreign policy? Conflict in the middle east is a form of foreign policy (revise).  How so?

What is foreign policy?  official U.S. policy designed o solve problems that take place between us and actors outside our borders

Example:  How is religious conflict throughout the world handled?  via the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom

Foreign policy is almost always carried out for the good of American citizens or in the interest of national security.

What about past actions via the U.S on foreign policy?

–Many politicians have tried to encourage Americans to turn their backs on the rest of the word, promoting a foreign policy called isolationism, which holds that Americans should put themselves and their problems first and not interfere in global concerns.

–The U.S. has tried isolationism before, most notably after World War I, but the experiment was largely seen as a failure

What about after 9-11?

–The events that day have put to rest the fiction that what happens “over there” is unrelated to what is happening “over here”

Interventionism–a foreign policy view that the United Staes should actively engage in the affairs of other nations in order to try to shape events in accordance with U.S. interests

In the case of religious conflict–The U.S. practices interventionism by having annual reviews of each countries status (regarding religious freedom).  Countries are designated as CPCs or Countries of Particular Concern, some countries have to be watched as severe violations of religious freedom have grabbed the nation’s attention.
